Muguruza polishes off Fech to kick-start season
Garbine Muguruza, an ex-world no.1 and former Wimbledon winner, showed her prowess to end her nightmare run on the WTA Tour by picking up a hard-fought victory over Magdalena Frech.
Having suffered a shock 1st Round defeat at the grass court event in Berlin last week, the six-foot Spaniard made no mistake at Devonshire Park against an opponent ranked world No.92.
Muguruza, who has struggled all year, was back to her explosive best against the Pole to run away with the opening set in half-an-hour. But Fech fought back from a 3–1 deficit to force a tiebreak, and battled against her illustrious opponent before Muguruza sealed success with her fourth match point to register a hard-fought 102-minute 6–1 7–6(7) success.
