Lucky loser Purcell marches into last four

Ex-champion Seppi stunned by gritty Australian

Max Purcell scrambled into his inaugural ATP Tour semi-final with a tough tussle to beat experienced Andreas Seppi 6–4 1–6 6–4.

The fearless 23-year-old from Sydney, who only entered the main draw as a lucky loser from qualifying, has bulldozed his way into the Devonshire Park annals with tremendous displays.

Seppi, the 2011 Eastbourne champion, was edged out in the opening set but bounced back to race away with the second set by winning five games on the bounce.

Australian ace Purcell had registered victories on grass this week over two former top 10 stars, South Africa’s 2018 Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson and France’s Gaël Monfils, and then added the scalp of the Italian veteran with a gutsy display.

Purcell, world ranked no.283 at the start of the week, raced into a 40–0 lead on Seppi’s serve but dropped the first match point before completing the task on Court No.1.
