Linette scores hat-trick of triumphs over Riske

Magda Linette took over three hours to register an impressive three-set triumph over No.17 seed Alison Riske in an epic Centre Court clash.

Riske had come up short at last week’s grass court event in Birmingham, stunned by Britain’s world No.141 Kate Boulter. Yet Riske, who had already lost to the Pole twice this year, snatched the opening set on the tie-break despite some wayward shots.

Linette, ranked some 31 places behind world No.35 Riske, stormed away with the second set courtesy of a string of aces and powerful winners. Her ability to win 11 out of 13 break points kept her in the match and forced a third set tie-break.

Thanks to 11 aces and 52 winners Linette made it a hat-trick of triumphs over Riske this year with an epic 189-minute success 6–7(3), 6–3, 7–6(4) that deservedly won a standing ovation from the crowd.
