Kontaveit v Giorgi: Semi-final Preview

Estonian ace faces fearless Italian qualifier

Anett Kontaveit, who has had to battle to reach her second WTA Tour semi-final this year, faces gritty Italian Camila Giorgi for a place in the final.

The world no.27 is the favourite to triumph, but Devonshire Park regular Giorgi is no push over and is likely to be the fans’ favourite as she has been wowing at Eastbourne over the years.

Kontaveit saw off Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic with a closely fought 2–6 7–6(2) 7–5 success, and during the 150-minute encounter showed some of the flaws that have long haunted her on grass.

She faces another qualifier in Giorgi, the world no.75 coached by her father Sergio. The 29-year-old has scooped five victories at Eastbourne, but struggled to fend off top seed Aryna Sabalenka 7–6 0–6 6–4 to dispatch the Belarusian world no.4 in just over two hours.

The pair will probably be hoping that the rain sets in to delay their clash as both will be exhausted from their respective quarter-final exploits. Giorgi has been on court for almost 10 hours, which is roughly double the amount of time that Kontaveit has spent to reach the semi-final stage.

Each player has the talent to storm into the final, meaning that the match could swing either way. With the Estonian having recorded victory over Giorgi in the 2020 Fed Cup, their only previous meeting, and not as fatigued as the Italian then Kontaveit is favourite to win.

Prediction | Kontaveit in three sets
