Aleksandra Wozniak saw off Kazakhstani Galina Voskoboeva 6-3 4-6 7-6 to progress to 2nd Round at Devonshire Park.
The topsy turvy contest was far from a classic, with a string of unforced errors spoiling a flowing contest.
The Canadian ace had the upper hand from the very start, and deservedly took the opening set.
Voskoboeva, sensing the knock-out blow, cleverly altered her tactics to snatch a fiercely fought second set to level matters.
With the momentum very much in Voskoboeva’s favour, and growing in confidence, it became a cat and mouse encounter with neither player willing to be too adventurous on their serves.
Even when the final set tiebreak proved to the only way to decide who would progress, timid shots were exchanged and it was Wozniak who picked up a tentative 7-5 success.
