Heather Watson came through her first test at Birmingham’s Aegon Classic with a confident straight set success over Camila Giorgi, a specialist on grass.
With a trio of showers before the Eastbourne-bound pair took to Centre Court after 5pm, the British #2 was cheered throughout the 6-4 7-5 triumph.
Watson, who slipped up at last week’s Aegon Open in Nottingham, secured the opening set courtesy of winning the only break point she gained.

First set goes to Heather Watson
The world #55, who will compete in the qualifiers at Devonshire Park next weekend. had a tougher task in the second set against the Italian but saved all six break points – in the second and fifth games – but rallied enough to book a 2nd Round berth.
It was a match of high quality and almost 50 winners between them, just Giorgi’s 29 unforced errors enough to hand the Guernsey girl victory.
Watson explained: “I was very focused at the end, and I’m so glad we got to play the match without any rain delays.
“She hits the ball extremely hard. I had to accept she will hit a lot of winners but had to take advantage when she made mistake – I think I’m playing very well.
“I have family who live close by in Coventry, so it feels like a second home being here.”
“But I haven’t had the results I’ve wanted here in the past, so I am really motivated this year to do well.”
