Francesca Schiavone

The London-based 2010 French Open champion enters the AEGON International brimming with confidence following her maiden grand slam success.

Has had a brilliant 2010 campaign, culminating in the French Open title. Started the season with a semi-final run at the New Zealand Open before a last 16 at the Australian Open
.

Captured the Barcelona title in April 2010 without dropping a set, and followed this success with an incredible showing at Roland Garros to leap up to world no6 going into the 2010 Eastbourne event.

Although never really taking the WTA Tour alight on grass, and rarely played at Eastbourne in recent years, Schiavone
lost in the third round to Russian Maria Sharapova at the 2009 AEGON Classic in Birmingham.

Then the Italian fell at the semi-final stage to rising Belgium ace Yanina Wickmayer at 2009 Hertogenbosch before romping through the rounds at SW19 only to bow out in the quarter-finals to Russian Elena Dementieva.

Surprise winner at 2010 French Open.

Chances of winning | Could reach the final, although will be trying to conserve energy for a crack at claiming a second grand slam at SW19 the week after Eastbourne. Lost only one indoor match this year, and lost just as many in 2009. Has a game suited to fast surfaces, and had an impressive 2009 grass court season. Impressive 2010 campaign, with a win-loss record of 15-3 on clay courts that was rewarded with the French Open crown against all the odds.
