2009 Monday news

As crowds flocked to sun-soaked Devonshire Park for the third-consecutive day, British No.2 Alex Bogdanovic was the first British player to reach the second round, defeating Ivo Minar (CZE) 6-4 7-6(3).

“I am really pleased with the win today,” said Bogdanovic, “I’ve been working hard on the mental and physical side of my game and I’m playing good tennis.”

Bogdanovic faces tournament No.2 seed, Dimitry Tursanov (RUS) in the second round.

Middlesex’s James Ward lined up a potential second round meeting with No.1 seed, Igor Andreev, defeating Victor Crivoi (ROU) 6-1 6-3.

“The match wasn’t as comfortable as the scoreline suggested but I thought I played well,” said Ward. “It was great to get my first main draw win at an ATP event and it’s good to get some more matches before Wimbledon.”

British No.4 Ward will have to wait until Andreev plays his first round match against Frank Dancevic (CAN) in the first match on centre court on Tuesday, to find out if he will face the tournament top seed.

Josh Goodall from Hampshire joined Bogdanovic and Ward in the second round with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Tatsuma ITO (JPN). British No.3 Goodall faces former world No.3 Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) in the second round.
