Sunday 1st Round Preview: Bencic’s back

Bencic: The main draw

Belinda Bencic, the rising Swiss star coached by Martina Hingis’ mother, is the player that fans will be clamouring to see when seven of the 1st Round matches start the main draw rolling.

The teenager has been handed a showdown with German Mona Barthel, with defending champion Madison Keys of the US waiting for the winner.

France’s Caroline Garcia faces Italian Roberta Vinci with German Andrea Petkovic next up for the victor. Australian Casey Dellacqua is up against Slovakian late replacement Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.

American trio Alison Riske, Sloane Stephens and Coco Vandeweghe should have few difficulties negotiating their way to face a seeded player as they are drawn against France’s Alize Cornet, British wildcard Naomi Broady and Swede Johanna Larsson respectively.

With Eastbourne-based British #3 Johanna Konta, whose game suits grass, tackling Kazakhstan’s Zarina Diyas – the reward for the winner is to play ex-Eastbourne champ.
