Review: Sony Smart Tennis Sensor
Sony will become the latest company to serve the UK market with tennis technology, which offers real time data via feedback from a racquet.
A small red piece of plastic is set to revolutionise the UK tennis market with Sony set to launch its Smart Tennis Sensor in 2015. The sensor, will be compatible with most HEAD, Prince, Wilson and Yonex racquets, measures 31.3mm in diameter and weighs approximately eight grammes.
Attached to the butt-cap of the racket, the revolutionary sensor takes both gyro and vibration readings from the frame to feed this data to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth.
Ball speed, swing speed, spin and impact spot are all available in real time, or can be stored to be downloaded later. It can also be used in conjunction with the video function on a smartphone to give a detailed breakdown of strokes during replay.
The Sony Smart Tennis Sensor, approved by the ITF in July 2014, has been on sale in Japan since May 2015 with a date yet to be confirmed for launch in the UK market..
Approval by the ITF means that professionals can train with the device and compete in matches using it.
