Camila Giorgi, who impressed at last year’s Aegon International and recently won her maiden title, faces a Qualifier in the 1st Round at Eastbourne with the current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova waiting to face the winner.
The Italian captured the 2015 Topshelf Open on grass in the Netherlands and has a never-say-die attitude both on and off court, inspired by her father who supports her from the sidelines, that should take her far on the WTA Tour.
Heather Watson, the British #1 who crashed out unexpectedly at Birmingham’s Aegon Classic, is in the same quarter of the draw but would have to overcome Varvara Lepchenko in her opening match with #11 Elina Svitolina next before a showdown with either #5 seed Carla Suarez Navarro or Sloane Stephens.
In the same half of the draw British wildcard Harriet Dart has little chance against Dominika Cibulkova, who will tackle #3 seed Lucie Safarova next.
Sam Stosur, elevated to #16 seed after Swiss star Timea Bacsinszky decided to rest before Wimbledon, will come up against either a Qualifier or late replacement Tsvetana Pironkova from Bulgaria.
Should Stosur reach the last eight she is projected to face either #8 seed Karolina Pliskova or #9 seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
Pliskova is draw against either Casey Dellaqua or Bacsinszky’s replacement Anna Schmiedlova. With former Eastbourne champion Radwanska to face the winner from two Qualifiers.
Eugenie Bouchard, last year’s Wimbledon runner-up, is on a dire run of 10 defeats from her past 11 matches. The Canadian has fallen out of the world’s top 10 and is going through a confidence crisis since changing coaches this year. Bouchard is set to face the winner from the match between Alize Cornet and Alison Riske.
Bouchard admitted: “I’ve been trying to pick myself up in the last couple of months, but it’s just not happening.
“It’s a pretty tiring routine to lose in the 1st Round every week and I don’t know what I’m going to work on with my coach, hopefully stuff that makes me get better.”
Should Bouchard overcome her first hurdle then she could come face-to-face with defending Eastbourne champion Madison Keys who has ex-world #1 Lindsay Davenport as her coach.
But Keys has a tough test as she plays either Mona Barthel or rising Swiss star Belinda Bencic, who is coached by Martina Hingis’ mother.
In the same quarter is former Devonshire Park winner Ekaterina Makarova, who plays either Zarina Diyas or Eastbourne-based British wildcard Johanna Konta.
Spain’s Garbine Muguruza will face either Madison Brengle or a Qualifier, and if successful is set for a showdown against either Diyas, Konta or Makarova.
The final quarter of the draw pits two potential 2015 champions in the form of #2 seed Caroline Wozniacki and last season’s runner-up Angelique Kerber.
Wozniacki goes into unknown territory as she faces the winner of a battle between two Qualifiers. Assuming that the Denmark ace negotiates her first match then she will play either #15 seed Flavia Pennetta, veteran Svetlana Kuznetsova or another Qualifier.
Kerber, who has finished Eastbourne runner-up twice over the past three seasons, should overcome the winner of the tie between Johanna Larsson and Coco Vandeweghe. Next on her radar is either #10 seed Andrea Petkovic, if she is successful to despatch either Caroline Garcia or Roberta Vinci.
