2014 Aegon International

Saturday Preview: British wildcards take to Court

Feliciano Lopez will be vying for back-to-back Eastbourne titles, but standing in his way is top seed and debutant Richard Gasquet.

The Spanish 32-year old had to win two matches in a day to reach the Aegon International final, defeating France’s Jeremy Chardy on Court #1 before seeing off America’s Sam Querrey on Centre Court – both in straight sets.

French ace Gasquet brushed aside the challenge of Uzbekistani Denis Istomin and has been in formidable form all week, despite only recently returning to the ATP Tour after a two-month layoff with a back injury.

Gasquet said:

“It’ll be a big match for me, but I’m ready for it and I’lll try to fight the best I can and see what happens.”

Angelique Kerber makes her second Devonshire Park final appearance in three years and will tackle Madison Keys in her first ever WTA Tour final.

No5 seed Kerber defeated ex-Eastbourne champion Caroline Wozniacki in three sets in a topsy-turvy encounter.

Kerber fluffed match points to end up as the 2012 Aegon International runner-up to Austrian Qualifier Tamira Paszek,

American 19-year-old Keys will be hoping that it is third time lucky against the German, having lost twice to Kerber in their previous contests that were both played in Australia – the 2013 Australian Open and the 2014 Sydney Open.

Keys hammered British #1 and wildcard entry Heather Watson in a one-sided affair on Centre Court to reach the final.
