Monday Ladies Round-up: Vesnina’s defensive mind set

Elena Vesnina began the defence of her Eastbourne crown with a steady 6-3 6-4 victory over Shuai Peng, with the Russian relegated to Court No2.

American Lauren Davis rallied from a set and a break down to overturn Czech Karolina Pliskova 4-6 7-6 (5) 6-4 in the opening match on Court No3.

But former Eastbourne champion Tamira Paszek surprisingly fell without much of a fight on Court No4 in a poor contest to Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh 6-3 7-5.

Francesca Schiavone, the former French Open champion, battled back from 3-1 in the third set on Court No2 to pull off an impressive win over talented Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic. The London-based Italian veteran had to pull on all her experience to register a 6-7 (2) 6-0 7-6 (2) success.
