Kristina Mladenovic made heavy weather of securing a 2nd Round berth, taking almost two hours to eliminate Yanina Wickmayer in a Centre Court thriller.
After the one-way traffic of the day’s opener, when France’s Alize Cornet was rolled over by great Dane Caroline Wozniacki, the Centre Court crowd were served up an epic encounter that was fiercely fought.
Mladenovic took the honours 7-6(6) 6-4 in 118 minutes, both players given loud applause by the appreciative spectators after their intriguing contest.
French ace Mladenovic staved off two set points before clinching the tiebreak with a real tussle.
And Mladenovic, who recently defeated reigning Aegon International champion Belinda Bencic of Switzerland at the Ricoh Open on the the grass in the Netherlands, continued her dominance on the surface to edge the second set and victory.
Mladenovic is next up against world #10 and fourth seeded Timea Bacsinsky of Switzerland, who received a 1st Round bye in this star-studded Wimbledon warm-up event.
