Petra Kvitova beat Lucie Safarova on a tense third set tiebreak to stutter into the 2nd Round and maintain her 100% winning record against her Czech Fed Cup team-mate.
Kvitova, a former Wimbledon winner, ran away with the opening set but allowed her concentration to slip when serving for the match in the second set.
Unseeded Safarova, facing her compatriot for the fourth time on the WTA Tour this season, took full advantage of the slip up to win only her second set ever over Kvitova.
And in the decisive set it was Safarova who came close to registering a shock victory, only to taste a 6-1 5-7 7-6 (4) defeat.
Kvitova, the #2 seed and world #6, who relies heavily on her serve to earn points was tested to the hilt and can breath a sign of relief that she managed to improve this year’s win-loss record to 17-10 with this triumph.
