2016 Aegon International

Konta set to be star attraction

Local ace aims to be a hit once more

Konta defeated Roberta Vinci in the 2nd Round of the Italian Open but fell to Misaki Doi in the next round

Johanna Konta, the Eastbourne-based ace, is set to become a hit at Devonshire Park at this year’s Aegon International.

Australian-born Konta has registered back-to-back clay court victories, her first such success on the surface on the WTA Tour, as she prepared for a shot at Roland Garros.

And Konta has pedigree at the Grand Slam events, having become a shock semi-finalist at the opening major of the season that included a stunning 1st Round success over American veteran Venus Williams.

Konta opened her attempt to win the Italian Open by registering her fifth triumph over a top 10 player, Italian Roberta Vinci her 2nd Round victim.

But her lack of experience of winning on clay soon showed, slipping up in the next round to Japan’s Misaki Doi.

And the 25-year-old is not expected to make much of an impact at the French Open, but will be looking forward to the grass court season.

Konta has signed up for all three Aegon pre-Wimbledon tournaments on grass, including Eastbourne’s very own Aegon International that last year kick-started her career.
