2015 Aegon International

Kerber beaten by virus

Angelique Kerber, who captured her maiden grass tournament on Sunday, has become the second seeded player to exit Eastbourne without hitting a ball.

And the German ace joins Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova on the sickbed ahead of Wimbledon after she followed suit and cited a viral infection for her no-show on the Devonshire Park grass.

Kerber, twice a runner-up at Eastbourne traditional warm-up event before the Championships, completed a day of the world’s leading left-handers failing to get through to the last 16 of the Aegon International.

Reigning Wimbledon champion Kvitova withdrew from Eastbourne on Monday but is recuperating at the south coast seaside resort before she tries to defend her crown.
