Sara Errani, whose unorthodox serve fails miserably on fast surfaces, crashed in straight sets to American Qualifier Lauren Davis.
The Italian #7 seed put up a good initial fight and was taken to a tiebreak, but some sloppy groundstrokes and a reluctance to move off the baseline resulted in a 7-6 (5) 6-2 defeat in 101 minutes.
Another couple of Italians also made it only a swift visit to the Eastbourne grass.
World #21 Roberta Vinci was despatched 7-5 6-1 on Court #1 by Devonshire Park regular Daniela Hantuchova from Slovakia.
And Qualifier Francesca Schiavone, a former French Open champion, fell to Russia’s ex-Eastbourne winner Ekatrina Makarova 7-5 6-3.
But two Italians made it past the first hurdle. Camila Giorgi produced the shock of the day to send Belarus Victoria Azarenka packing in a three set thriller on Centre Court and #6 seed Flavia Pennetta saw off Taiwan Qualifier Su-Wei Hsieh 6-3 6-3 in just under an hour.
Pennetta faces great British hope Heather Watson next, who pulled off a wondrous 3-6 7-5 6-2 win over Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in 134 minutes.
