Camila Giorgi’s emphatic form on grass continued with a straight set victory 6-2 6-4 over Netherlands’ Kiki Bertens, the surprise package of the Topshelf Open.
The Italian #5 seed stormed away with the opening set in 28 minutes, twice breaking Bertens in a set of very few points and short rallies.
Giorgi’s gritty style was apparent throughout the second set, but she surprisingly dropped her serve in the third game to be pegged back to a 2-1 lead.
The sixth game became a marathon, Bertens nervously holding her serve and saving a break point to make it 3-3.
But serving to stay in the match Bertens was outmanoeuvred by Giorgi who hit some masterstrokes but then made unforced errors too. Four deuces followed in a tense game, and the local lady was well supported in ‘s-Hertogenbosch only for Giorgi to wrap the match up in an entertaining 78 minutes.
Giorgi, the world #35, faces Switzerland’s in-form Belinda Bencic in the final before she tackles the grass tournament at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park ahead of the 2015 Wimbledon Championships.
