2015 Aegon International

Flying the flag for Czech Republic

Czech_RepublicIt is the first time in the Open Era that the world’s WTA Tour top 20 features four Czech players with current Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova leading the charge, followed by 2015 French Open runner-up Lucie Safarova, Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Strycova.

All four have the ability to reach the final at Devonshire Park, but there can only be one winner crowned at the 2015 Aegon International.

2014 Aegon International: Quarter-finalist
2015 French Open: Beaten in 4sh Round by Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky
2014 Wimbledon: Champion
Best Wimbledon: Champion (2011 & 2014)
Biggest scalp: Serena Williams in 2015 Madrid Open

Chances of winning: Likely. The two-time Wimbledon winner means that the top seed at the 2015 Aegon International starts as a strong favourite to take the crown and add to her 16 WTA Tour Singles titles. Since tasting defeat in the 2011 Aegon International final to France’s Marion Bartoli, Kvitova has picked up only three wins over the past three visits to Devonshire Park although last year withdrew allegedly suffering from a hamstring injury. Kvitova claims grass is her favourite surface and her biggest threat appears to be defending champion Madison Keys from the US.

2014 Aegon International: Quarter-finalist
2015 French Open: Beaten in 2nd Round by Romania’s Andreea Mitu
2014 Wimbledon: 2nd Round
Best Wimbledon: 2nd Round (2013 & 2014)
Biggest scalp: Ana Ivanovic in 2014 US Open & 2015 Dubai Duty Free Championships

Chances of winning: Unlikely but the 6′ 1” rising star is nevertheless a danger to the big names. With four WTA Tour titles since 2013, Pliskova has been improving rapidly on the circuit and this year has cracked the world’s top 20. A poor record on grass doesn’t bode well for her chances of claiming top prize at Devonshire Park, but she has the ability to cause a few upsets. Her twin sister Kristina bagged the 2010 Junior Wimbledon crown.

2014 Aegon International: 1st Round
2015 French Open: Runner-up
2014 Wimbledon: Semi-finalist
Best Wimbledon: Semi-finalist (2014)
Biggest scalp: Maria Sharapova at 2015 French Open

Chances of winning: Likely. Left-hander whose style of play is not dissimilar to Spain’s Rafael Nadal. Registered her first win at Wimbledon in 2007 then had a barren spell at SW19 until 2011. At the 2011 Aegon International she fluffed a match point in her opening match against France’s Marion Bartoli, who went on to take the title. Last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist got off to a slow start in 2015 but has been on a roll and finished runner-up to American Serena Williams at Roland Garros. At the 2014 Aegon International was ousted by compatriot Petra Kvitova in the 1st Round, losing in the third set tie-break.

2014 Aegon International: N/A
2015 French Open: Beaten in 1st Round by Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova
2014 Wimbledon: Quarter-finalist
Best Wimbledon: Runner-up (2014)
Biggest scalp: Na Li at 2014 Wimbledon

Chances of winning: Possible as she has cracked the world’s top 20 and has no qualms to brush aside the big names. Last year’s Wimbledon saw Strycova reach the last eight, including impressive triumphs over Na Li and Caroline Wozniacki. Prior to her impressive run Strycova raced into the grass court final at Birmingham’s Aegon Classic in England but fell to Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic. Has surprisingly only one WTA Tour title, the 2011 Bell Challenge in Quebec, Canada. If her grass court aggression is as good as it was in 2014 then expect Strycova to cause some upsets at Devonshire Park.
