2015 Aegon International

Flying the flag for Bulgaria

Flag_map_of_BulgariaTsvetana Pironkova is the sole Bulgarian representative after accepting a last-gasp entry to the tournament.

She made a name for herself by blasting past the big guns at Wimbledon in 2010 and 2011. Venus Williams was world #2 when Pironkova shocked her in their quarter-final showdown, and she the lofty Bulgarian accounted for the then-world #3 Vera Zvonareva in the 3rd Round.

Her last victory over a top five player was at the 2012 Aegon International over the then-world #3 Agnieszka Radwanska. Last year Pironkova picked up her maiden title by claiming the Apia International Sydney title by dismissing a trio of top 10 players in succession without dropping a set – Sara Errani in the quarter-finals, Petra Kvitova in the last four and Angelique Kerber.

2015 French Open: Beaten in 3rd Round by America’s Sloane Stephens
2014 Wimbledon: 1st Round
Best Wimbledon: Semi-final (2010)

Chances of winning: Unlikely but not impossible. Her decision to compete on Eastbourne’s grass courts will excite fans of the game as Pironkova is known as the “Wimbledon dark horse” for her exploits at SW19 in 2010 and 2011. The world #48 surprisingly made a 1st Round exit at the 2014 Aegon International, beaten by British #1 Heather Watson lifted by the crowd’s superb support and her ever-improving form. Eastbourne has brought indifferent results with eight wins and eight defeats.
