2015 Aegon International

Cibulkova crushes Safarova

Cibulkova dictated play in the final set

Lucie Safarova, the #3 seed, fell a shock victim at the first hurdle in Eastbourne to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova 7-6(7) 6-4 in just under two hours.

Left-hander Safarova, whose style of play is not dissimilar to Spain’s Rafael Nadal, repeated her first match exit from last year at Devonshire Park.

Last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist, beaten by Czech Republic compatriot Petra Kvitova in the 1st Round at the 2014 Aegon International, was pushed into a tie-break by hard-hitting Cibukova where she fluffed two set points and fell behind after 62 minutes.

She dropped her service game to open the second set, and with the industrious Cibulkova dictating play there were no further breaks and the Slovakian – on her return to the circuit after four months due to an Achilles injury – progressed to the last 16.
