1997 Final: Honours even as rain is final winner

Joint 1997 Direct Line International Women's Singles champion Jana Novotna

Jana Novotna was on the verge of capturing the first set when leading Spaniard Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario 6-5 before the rain arrived at Devonshire Park.

But the rain simply wouldn’t stop and resulted in the first ever shared winners at Eastbourne, Czech serve and volley expert Novotna settling for a share of the spoils.

With Wimbledon starting on the following Monday, the organisers sensibly decided to share the final prize money of the Direct Line Insurance Championships equally and divide the title between Novotna and Sanchez-Vicario.

Novotna, the 1993 Wimbledon runner-up, had accounted for Russian Natasha Zvereva in a thrilling three set semi-final. Her other victims had been Indonesia’s Yayuk Basuki in the 2nd Round and Japan’s Ai Sugiyama in the quarter-final.

Sanchez-Vicario, who had finished runner-up at SW19 in 1995 and last year, didn’t drop a set all tournament.

She dismissed Holland’s Brenda Schultz-McCarthy – a shock winner over Monica Seles – in the last four, Romanian Irina Spirlea in the quarter-finals and Australian Kerry-Anne Guse in the 2nd Round.
